Am Anfang des Krieges gelangen den Deutschen Einfälle in den Süden Britisch-Ostafrikas. Am 15. August 1914 nahm die deutsche Schutztruppe den britischen Grenzort Taveta ein und baute ihn zu einem Militärstützpunkt für Unternehmungen gegen die britische Uganda-Bahn aus. Dies führte bei den Briten zu der Entscheidung, Tausende indische Soldaten nach Mombasa zu bringen, die ab September 1914 dort eintrafen. Die Uganda-Bahn war im Verlauf der ersten eineinhalb Kriegsjahre das Ziel zahlreicher deutscher Kleinkampfgruppen, die britische Militärzüge angriffen und Sprengfallen gegen überfahrende Züge legten. Diese Kommandounternehmen führten durch unwegsames, wasserarmes Gelände und waren daher sehr entbehrungsreich. Erst im März 1916 gelang es den Briten die Lage unter Kontrolle zu bringen und die langen Bahnabschnitte zu sichern.

Das Sultanat Sansibar trat als Protektorat Großbritanniens am 5. August 1914 gegen das Deutsche Reich und am 20. August 1914 gegen Österreich-Ungarn in den Krieg ein. Am 20. September 1914 beschoss der deutsche Kreuzer Königsberg den Hafen und die Funkanlage von Sansibar, wobei der britische Kreuzer Pegasus sank.
